GCHQ Cyber Security Challenge 2014
The final of the Cyber Security Challenge was the culmination of a year of events and saw the 42 qualifying candidates put through their paces against a fast moving scenario which sought to test their technical skills and more. The venue, the Churchill War Rooms, an underground bunker in central London, provided an atmospheric backdrop for the competition with war sirens howling and red lights flashing as candidates received new information to help them investigate the cyber incident that was unfolding.
GCHQ's experts contributed to the event by giving a technical steer to the scenario the candidates faced. GCHQ itself is a high tech organisation and currently has a skilled workforce. However, as part of our efforts under the National Cyber Security Strategy, we recognise the need to bring on the next generation of cyber security talent to help the UK cope with the ever evolving challenges in this field.
A previous finalist of the Cyber Security Challenge spoke at the launch event. The Challenge helped him go on to a full time career in cyber security starting with a summer placement at GCHQ. Reflecting on his experience, he said: "It was very eye opening. It's an incredibly exciting place to work full of great people. It's amazing to know your work is of national importance".
The event finished up on Saturday evening with an awards ceremony where our Director General for Government and Industry Cyber Security, Ciaran Martin, congratulated the candidates in his speech. We wish those who took part all the best with their future careers in the exciting world of cyber security.

GCHQ Cyber Security Challenge 2014
Now, people are being encouraged to
take part in the next part of the Cyber Security Challenge UK game,
which is designed to give members of the public a chance to experience
what it is like to be a GCHQ operative.
The story goes that Ebell
is concerned about the threat of an imminent attack and have asked GCHQ
operatives (members public playing the game) to assess the scale of the
threat.
Players must identify vulnerabilities in snippets of code
hidden on the hard drive and explain how they could be exploited – as
well as suggest how they could be fixed.
A source told MailOnline
that the task has been devised using technology used by GCHQ in real
life to make the experience as realistic as possible.
High flyers
in the task will get the chance to take part in a reconnaissance meet up
at secret locations around the UK.
‘In the upcoming face-to-face
competition, winners of the GCHQ contest will be paired into teams to
fight a real-time "cyber-attack" on simulated critical infrastructure,’
he said.
They will use laptops to ‘hack’ into encrypted systems
and uncover details about ‘people behind the masks’ in the imaginary
scenario.
